At
present the research in the department has four main streams:
-
Molecular biological characterisation (using RT-PCR) of both host and
organism in the septic process in ICU patients. This research is in
collaboration with Dr R Cursons,
University of Waikato. At
present we are analysing the mRNA expression
of alpha adreno-receptors after cardiac surgery - and their modulation
by cytokines.
-
Development
of theoretical and experimental studies that explain the process of
general anaesthesia at a ‘mesoscale’ level. We have been developing a
theoretical model of cortical function, and how it may be affected by
general anaesthetic drugs. (With Professor J Wright and Drs Steyn-Ross)
We have recently received funding to extend our research into modelling
sleep.
-
The
neurophysical mechanisms by which general anaesthesia can cause
seizures. (Neurological Foundation Grant: in association with Professor
G Ludbrook, University of Adelaide, and Dr M Steyn-Ross, University of
Waikato)
-
Use
of the EEG to monitor depth of anaesthesia
We would
welcome applicants who are thinking of doing research degrees (MSc, PhD,
or MD) in the areas mentioned above.
