  Staffing:

We have a nursing staff of about 66.5 FTE's with various levels of experience in the field of critical care. The nursing staff are led by 5 clinical nurse leaders (CNLs).

We have two clinical nurse educators who, in conjunction with the CNLs are responsible for coordinating the ICU course and other education programs that we run each year. We have three respiratory technicians who are responsible for the cleaning, setting up and maintenance of our equipment. They perform somatosensory evoked potential and transcranial doppler studies and also teach equipment topics to medical and nursing staff. There are six health care assistants, who assist with patient cares and general housekeeping, and one attendant who assists with turns, lab requests and other jobs as required.

Shifts

At present nurses work a mixture of eight hour and twelve hour shifts. The twelve hour shifts are available after you have worked in the unit for six months, and when a vacancy arises in the group. There is a rotating roster with night duty every four to five weeks. Our permanent night staff, come off every three months for a period of one to two weeks to up-skill, refresh and attend study days.

Education

We have an extensive education program that is run by our two Clinical Nurse Educators, the details of which are outlined on our Nursing Education page.

Research

This unit has a strong focus on research. We have an appointed research assistant who is responsible for much of setting up and collating the data. All staff are encouraged to participate in research. Nursing staff from the floor regularly collect data for various trials.
