Registrars

There are 10 registrar positions which are recognised for unlimited C24 training by the Joint Faculty of Intensive Care Medicine of the Australian and New Zealand College of Anaesthetists (FJFICM). These posts involve hands on care of the range of intensive care patients. Trainees receive a 2 day orientation to the unit and during their rotation will become comfortable in the assessment of the critically ill patient and are expected to become proficient in the insertion of monitoring lines and to be familiar with patient ventilation, ionotrope administration, dialysis techniques and parenteral nutrition.

There is both formal and informal teaching. Informal teaching occurs daily principally during the 3 daily ward rounds, the daily X-Ray meetings and weekly microbiology round. There is a weekly Journal Club with both registrars and seniors presenting, a weekly topic review/teaching session and weekly teaching sessions by the senior staff. Fortnightly we hold a teaching session on the patient simulator.  Mortality and morbidity and Acute Incident Monitoring (AIMS) meetings are held monthly.

The registrars are on the transport roster and will do both helicopter and fixed wing inter-hospital transport of critically ill patients, assisted by a skilled flight nurse.  The registrars are part of the trauma team and also form part of the arrest team.

ICU registrars work an average of 44 rostered hours a week with additional 17 hours of transport call. Night duties are divided into 3 or 4 night blocks and trainees typically do 7 days of nights every 8 weeks. Registrars are paid according to the award and are entitled to 6 weeks paid study leave before their exams.

Senior Registrar

One SR is appointed each year, starting in early December. This position is an excellent bridging experience between registrar training and a consultant post. As such, it is ideal for those that have successfully completed final fellowship examinations in medicine, anaesthesia or intensive care but have not yet completed their prescribed training time.

The SR is rostered on the consultant roster with nominal supervision from one of the department seniors. Rarely the SR may be required to fill in for the registrar roster.

The SR position is very flexible and is determined by the interests of the trainee. It is an excellent opportunity for those studying for the FJFICM examinations. Others have used the year to become involved in research or to develop a special interest. It is also a good opportunity to learn techniques such as percutaneous tracheostomy, insertion of intracranial pressure monitoring, transcranial doppler etc.

The SR is responsible for the Mortality and Morbidity meetings, for arranging the Journal Club and weekly CME session rosters and is involved in registrar and the ICU nursing course teaching.
