Handbook and Protocols

The Intensive Care Unit transport serves the Midland region of New Zealand.

Critically ill patients are transported to tertiary hospitals based in Hamilton and Auckland. We perform 350 - 400 retrievals annualy (90% by helicopter) and these numbers are growing steadily.

Our team comprises an ICU registrar and a nurse. Nurses receive advanced training and are encouraged to complete the New Zealand Flight Nurses Association course held biannually in Auckland.

Our helicopter (a Bell 222) is based on Waikato Hospital grounds and is the preferred mode of transport. It is also used by ambulance, midwifery, neonatal and emergency departments.

We use a Piper Chieftain for longer distance transports with access to the Pacific Air Ambulance Metroliner in Auckland when a pressurised craft is needed.
